You may be wondering a little about how I came to be here with you today.  I don’t believe in coincidences.  I believe that things happen for a reason.  I believe that you and I have a reason to connect.

Let me tell you a quick story. Some time ago I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. At the same time, I was going thru menopause and I could not stop gaining weight. I couldn’t figure out why I was gaining weight and not able to lose it like I had in the past. I was tired all the time, had no energy, and was napping whenever I could sneak it in. I was eating all the wrong foods, trying to stay awake and drinking coffee like it was going out of style.

I was struggling to keep up with my everyday life. I was just barely keeping up, between my job, getting kids off to school, driving all over the place and completing what needed to be done every day. I ate the wrong foods. I thought I needed this, I deserved that, or I thought it would wake me up.

Boy was I wrong. All that happened is my waist got bigger, as well as my butt. I had almost no clothes that fit me. I was so angry, sad and depressed, I didn’t know what to do.  Food became my best friend and it sucked. No matter what, I was getting more tired and fat. I thought that this is what I was going to be like forever.  I was becoming a big unhappy mom and hated it.

Then something truly bad happened. I was told I had thyroid cancer. I thought to myself, “Are you kidding me?” I have no time for this. I have kids, a husband, I have a future! I needed that cancer out of me and I needed to get better and fast! Until I knew what I was dealing with I couldn’t lose the weight and get better. I had to figure it out and turn my life around. I realized that I was poisoning my body and killing my future with the way I was eating. Things had to change, right then and there!

As you can imagine, I was in bad shape and desperate. But I wasn’t ready to give up on my dream of traveling, seeing my kids get married, being a grandma, etc. Then I discovered how to fuel my body so it could get rid of the weight. My mind and body felt so much better and everything changed!

I learned how to eat. I stopped thinking of food as a comfort, a friend or even as a reward. I realized that food is fuel for my body, nothing more, nothing less.  I understood I only had one body and I was going to take great care of it. I discovered that I didn’t need to follow a “diet”.   I didn’t need to count calories.  I learned to listen to my body; I listened to it, and saw how it reacted to the right foods, sleep, my words and attitude.

I found that how I thought to myself played a big part in how I felt. That if I said “I can’t do that”, it was a guarantee that I could not do it. Yet, if I said, “I can do it”, I did it! As Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right”.

I discovered that sleeping throughout the night helped me to round out the whole picture. I was seeing results faster than I could have ever imagined. Once I discovered how to fuel my body and get rid of the weight, my mind and body felt so much better. Everything started to change! I ate better without following a plan that showed results only for as long as I was on it. I changed the way I thought about myself, feeling relaxed and more confident. I slept better, without tossing and turning and planning things in the middle of the night.
